Busy Bumble... and a product review

We stayed up very late watching All About Eve last night... what a great movie. Ari was quite taken with young Miss Norma Jean! I got a boxed set of Bette Davis movies for Christmas, and we're working our way through them.

I was feeling pretty snacky by the time I got home last night. I really wanted an orange, but we didn't have any, so I settled for the next best thing... an Orange Cranberry Gnu bar.

This morning (er, 12:30 PM) I had a big bowl of oats.

3/4 cup oats (made with skim milk)
1 tsp peanut butter
1 banana
1 tsp maple syrup
sprinkle of pecans
sprinkle of chocolate chips

I went to the gym and had a decent workout:

20:00 minutes stairmaster
16:00 minutes bike

ab series
stretching

total: 50:34 minutes
maximum heart rate: 174
average heart rate: 143
calories burned: 4- -?

I try to avoid eating a nutrition bar right after exercising, but since I slept so late and I'm eating dinner our at 7:30, I settled.

I liked this bar. Although the color was slightly off-putting (dark brown/greenish), I've definitely eaten more questionable things before. It had the texture of a Larabar, and tasted both earthy and sweet. The calories and fat are a little high considering the only moderate level of protein, but I would probably buy it again.

I came home and had a Sunkist navel orange:

And made the recipe I've gotten the most mileage out of: Chocolate Chip Pumpkin Squares (and cleaned the bowl, thank you!).

I'll have a treat for you later tonight... stay posted!

Have a holly jolly Christmas!

Merry Christmas / Solstisce/ Festivus, everyone! So far it's been a perfect day spent in the company of family and food. What's better than that?

My parents, Ari and I all decided that before we could open presents, we needed to eat some Trying to Heal goodies. I had a chocolate-covered cashew butter sandwich, which was even better than I remembered. I'll be sad when these guys are gone!

Here's a little re-cap, courtesy of master photographer and boyfriend Ari:

Trying on his new duds:

Baking gingerbread cookies!

We had a little difficulty with the dough; after about two minutes of being out of the freezer, it would get really soft and sticky and totally uncuttable.

Lilveggiepatch family Christmas favorite: baked German apple pancake.

With maple syrup for dipping, vitamins and Emergen-C:

I was still hungry so I heated up a Boca Spicy Chik'n burger and had it with ketchup and mustard.

Here's some of my foodie-related gifts, including much-needed cutting boards!

Every Christmas we see a movie; today we're going to see The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Hope it's good! Merry Christmas and have a GREAT day!

Are we there yet?

No Katie, we are not. I'm stuck in the library trying to get two research papers done, but I can't seem to focus at all. (There's a group of girls in my study room being SO LOUD... GRR.) I've never been very good at all-nighters, and the cafe that sells coffee and tea is closed... HMPF. Well, I'll stop my whining and get onto the real beef... er, fake beef (...tofeef?)

My uncle brought me a jar of his very own maple syrup on Sunday, and tonight was the perfect opportunity to use it! It was soooo good. Had I not been trying to restrain myself, I probably could have eaten the whole jar with a spoon!

I made maple mashed sweet potatoes, Gliding Calm tofu (1/3 of a block), and Kashi Original Pilaf with peas.

Look at all those textures!

Everything tasted better than usual today. The tofu was perfectly caramelized, the sweet potatoes were light and fluffy, and the pilaf (which I'd never tried before) was a nice surprise.

I packed some study snacks to take to the lib: carrots with Justin's Organic cinnamon peanut butter, a fat free blueberry yogurt, and a Z bar.

I ate the Z bar at 9:30 (almost 2 hours ago); it was pretty good! I think it's probably tied with the chocolate chip flavor.

Depending on how long I can make myself stay here I'll probably eat the rest of my goodies. For now, it's glasnost and perestroika...

I'll be home in three days, I'll be home in three days...
